With Autumn in the air, squirrels aren’t the only critters who should be thinking about finding more nuts. These sweet & spicy maple nuts hit all the right autumn notes of sweet, salty, and yes…fatty.
But unlike fried foods or animal fats, nuts provide healthy fats and lots of nutrition. And when eaten in moderation, they can curb the appetite and be a part of maintaining a healthy weight.
Walnuts also have their own “special powers”. They are a good source of copper and manganese which can help with energy and neurotransmitter synthesis, as well as strengthen the immune system. Additionally, they can also help to lower LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides, leading to overall better heart health.
People often comment on how a walnut looks like a little brain and therefore must be beneficial for the brain. It turns out there is some truth to that. Human and animal research suggests that eating 1–2 ounces (28–57 grams) of walnuts per day may improve brain function and reduce other risk factors for dementia, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
These walnuts are pretty tasty so a word to the wise…One ounce is about a quarter cup or one small handful. Don’t go crazy, ok? Unless that’s how you role, but now you know.
This is a quick and easy recipe, and modifications aren’t a problem. Sumac is a common spice used in the Middle East that has a lemony piney flavor and is also featured in my Jacob’s Red Sumac Lentil Soup recipe. It is easily found in any Middle East store as well as Amazon but lemon zest is also a good substitute.
These nuts make a tasty snack when you want something a little sweet, or a little salty. They would also make a nice addition to a charcuterie board or a hostess gift during the holidays.
